Belgian Malinois dogs are very active, hard-working, and intelligent, but they are extremely sensitive. They are always eager to please their owners and also love to play and do activities together with them.

They are great as family dogs but not for first time dog owners. Generally, Belgian Malinois dogs are very good companions and protectors of their family owner, as well as great with children.

Origin and History

As its name implies, the dog originated in Belgium and was recognized as early as the 1900s. It got its name from the city of Malines where its was known and famous for its loyalty and intelligence. The Belgian Malinois shares a common origin with other Belgian sheepdogs. They are not familiar in the United States or in any other countries around the world but are very prominent in Belgium.

Details and Specification

The Belgian Malinois is a large sized dog with its height reaching 24 to 26 inches for males and 22 to 24 inches for females. Male Malinois weigh 65 to 75 pounds while the female counterpart weighs 55 to 65 pounds. Malinois have short but straight hair that sheds moderately. Their coat is also weather resistant enabling them to adjust to different temperatures. Their coat color can be rich fawn or mahogany with black points on the tips.

Belgian Malinois dogs are excellent protectors. They are also known for their versatility, watchfulness, playfulness, and obedience. This type of dog has a tendency to bond and be loyal to only one person but generally deals with others well. They love to be with the family and would be content doing activities and exercise with them. This dog, however, can be very demanding and dominant towards their owners and also territorial towards other dogs.

It is crucial that training should be done in a very enthusiastic and active manner to keep the dog from getting bored. Boredom leads to being destructive. Training should be like a game but trainers should be firm and consistent. Because Malinois are highly sensitive, they react to different voice tones. Their intelligence, however, enables them to learn things very fast.

Caring & Nurturing (Haircut, Fur Treatment, Washing…)

Because the Belgian Malinois’ coat has a weather resistant quality, bathing should not be done often as this will remove the weather resistant properties of the coat. Brushing however, is necessary as this dog sheds often and heavily during shedding seasons. The ears and gums should always be inspected to keep them from getting infections.

Common Diseases

Belgian Malinois dogs are generally healthy dog breeds. Occasionally, they may experience hip and elbow dysplasia, epilepsy, eye problems, gastric torsions, skin allergies, excessive shyness, and excessive aggressiveness. Excessive shyness and aggressiveness can be solved or prevented by early socialization.

Food, Equipment & Games

Belgian Malinois should be given food similar to those foods that exist in their place of origin, as often as possible. It is recommended that Malinois be given food that is low in fiber and contains enough protein. Fiber sources include cabbage and wheat, and protein sources can be from poultry and fish.
